Palm Desert Skate Park Expands Hours, Removes Fees Starting July 1

The City of Palm Desert is rolling out significant changes to the Civic Center Skate Park following years of requests from the local skateboarding community.Starting July 1, the skate park will transition to an unsupervised model, allowing skaters to use the facility from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The changes also eliminate admission fees, making the park more accessible to residents and visitors.Local skateboarder and business owner Dale said the expanded hours are especially important during the summer months when afternoon temperatures can become dangerously hot."There’s a difference between skating in 75 to 80-degree weather and trying to skate at 100 degrees with a helmet on," Dale said.According to Sean Mears with the City of Palm Desert, the city decided to make the changes after hearing concerns from skaters about limited access and restrictive operating hours.“We heard from skaters that there were limited hours, and we wanted to open it up in the early morning hours when it’s still nice and cool, especially during the summer heat,” Mears said.To support the transition, the city updated its skate park ordinances, installed new signage, and added people counters to monitor attendance and measure the impact of the expanded access.For many in the local skateboarding community, the changes represent a long-awaited improvement that could also help support nearby businesses that serve skaters.“I think that’s what a lot of people wanted — just better times,” Dale said. “Opening at 7 a.m. in July is something I’m all for.”City officials hope the expanded hours and free access will encourage greater use of the park while providing a safer and more convenient recreational option for local skaters.
