Southern folk singer-songwriter Jake Xerxes Fussell has announced a new album titled The Old Beloved Path, set for release on September 18 via Fat Possum Records, according to multiple reports. The album marks his latest collection of folk and traditional material, following his previous work on the label.
Pitchfork reported that the album was produced by Ben Whiteley in North Carolina. The first taste of the record is a cover of the folk standard “Rock Island Line,” which Fussell was inspired to record after hearing Lonnie Donegan’s version of the spiritual. The track is streaming now.
Musicianvoice.com confirmed the release date and label, describing Fussell as a “Southern folk singer-songwriter” and noting that the album is titled The Old Beloved Path. A separate blog report echoed the same details, adding that listeners can hear Fussell’s version of “Rock Island Line” ahead of the full release.
The Old Beloved Path continues Fussell’s reputation for reviving and reshaping traditional American folk songs with a contemporary touch. With a producer experienced in the roots music scene and a lead single drawn from a classic spiritual, the album is shaping up as a notable addition to his catalog.
