Ice Cube and Nia Long are reuniting for a third installment in the 'Are We There Yet?' franchise, titled 'Are They Gone Yet?', which has been acquired by Skydance Sports. The comedy film, written by Chris Hazzard and Mike Fontana, is in early development and will follow Nick (Ice Cube) facing his biggest challenge yet: grandkids, according to Deadline.
The project comes 20 years after the original 2005 film and its 2007 sequel. Variety reported that the original 2005 film starred Ice Cube as Nick, a ladies' man who takes a road trip with his love interest's two kids, and debuted at the top of the domestic box office.
"The threequel is in early development after being acquired by Skydance Sports."
This marks a significant return for the franchise, which has been dormant for nearly two decades. Deadline noted that the film will follow Nick facing his biggest challenge yet: grandkids, adding a new generational twist to the road-trip comedy formula.
Skydance Sports, best known for sports-related content, is expanding into comedy with this acquisition. The involvement of the original stars suggests the studio is aiming to recapture the franchise's original box office success, which Variety highlighted as a strong debut for the first film.
