George Lucas, the visionary behind "Star Wars," has declared that artificial intelligence is the inevitable future of filmmaking, a stance that puts him at odds with many in Hollywood who see generative AI as a threat to creative jobs. According to The Playlist, the director believes AI represents the next major shift in moviemaking, and he has urged the industry to accept it.
"There's nothing you can do about it."
Lucas, who pioneered computer-generated imagery and digital cinematography on the "Star Wars" prequels, has never shied away from technological change. Comic Basics noted that he views AI as a tool to "make filmmaking much easier," a sentiment also echoed by The Independent, which reported Lucas saying, "It's much easier for us to make movies."
"The audience doesn't know what they want to see."
In his remarks, Lucas suggested that AI can help filmmakers discover what resonates with viewers, even when audiences themselves cannot articulate it. Episode Breakdown characterized his comments as "a significant perspective shift" in an industry still debating the role of machine learning in creative work.
Men's Journal described AI as a "divisive topic in Hollywood," and Fortress of Solitude pointed out the irony that Lucas made these pro-AI comments just months before his museum of human-made art is set to open. MEAWW further reported that Lucas said there is "nothing" anyone can do to stop the progress of AI, cementing his position as a tech-forward outlier in the current debate.
