Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has returned from vacation and resumed the investigation into Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. He has given her five days to prove that she used her passport exclusively for a trip to the United Kingdom to attend her daughter's graduation, according to multiple Spanish outlets including elDiario.es and okdiario.
Peinado's demand comes after he noticed that the passport, which was returned to Gómez exceptionally for that journey, shows no entry or exit stamps. The judge has warned that failing to provide proof could lead to charges of breaching a precautionary measure, a crime punishable by six months to one year in prison, elDiario.es reported.
"amenaza con imputarle un delito de quebrantamiento de medida cautelar, penado con cárcel de seis meses a un año"
The threat underscores the seriousness with which the court views the conditions under which the passport was temporarily released.
Meanwhile, the government has pushed back against what it sees as an overreach. According to cronicaglobal.elespanol.com, the administration has denounced the judge's "obsesión y motivación política" (obsession and political motivation). Five magistrates met on Monday to deliberate on the broader case, though no decision was expected to be disclosed that same day.
Gómez personally handed the passport back to the courts at Plaza de Castilla on Sunday, 20MINUTOS reported. The judge, having just resumed proceedings after his break, is now pressing for documentation that confirms the trip was limited to the stated family event.
