The US government has lifted its block on Anthropic's powerful Claude Mythos 5 AI model, allowing the company to release it to over 100 US institutions including major corporations and government agencies, according to multiple reports. Semafor noted that the move marks a significant de-escalation in tensions between the Trump Administration and Anthropic, following export controls imposed two weeks ago that shut down the model and its cousin Fable 5 after warnings from Amazon and other companies. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick informed Anthropic in a letter that the decision was made because "appropriate safeguards are in place," as reported by Wired. The reinstatement follows weeks of negotiations between the White House and the AI lab, which had seen the models abruptly removed on June 12, creating uncertainty in the industry and among allies whose cyber capabilities were impacted, according to Axios. Despite the limited rollout of Mythos 5, the public-facing version, Fable 5, remains in limbo. The Verge reported that there is no clear timeline for its rollout, with talks about the model still ongoing. Axios noted that Commerce Secretary Lutnick's letter acknowledged "significant progress" from the company's engagement with the government, but a full resolution remains elusive. "After two weeks of tense negotiations with the Trump administration, Anthropic's Mythos 5 model has been reinstated for a select group of organizations." This partial reinstatement underscores the high stakes around powerful AI models, where security concerns and export controls intersect with commercial and national security interests. "This marks a significant de-escalation in tensions between the Trump Administration and Anthropic." While Anthropic has secured access for over 100 institutions, the fate of Fable 5 hangs in the balance, leaving the company's broader public ambitions on hold. The coming weeks will determine whether the thaw continues or new restrictions emerge.
