Google pulls one-click satellite AI from Earth after a single day of policy trouble

Google has rolled back a newly launched AI feature on Google Earth that allowed users to generate satellite images with a single click, NPR reported. The feature was removed just one day after its unveiling because people were sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appeared to violate Google's policies. Before the reversal, nkomode.com and kjzz.org reported that journalists, human rights advocates and open source analysts recoiled in horror at the move: "The opportunities for abuse and disinfo are literally boundless," said one. Georgia Public Broadcasting and Benton reported the pause came after fears of deepfakes in the sky, with the initial enthusiasm giving way to policy concern within a day. NPR noted that while Google acknowledged geospatial professionals found useful applications for the tool, the company is pausing it to implement stronger safeguards. KNOX News Radio 1310 also reported the removal and the policy violations that prompted it.
