Today's design stories lean into the tension between preserving the past and building for the future. A heritage-listed bungalow gets a modern interior, while a Greek home burrows into drystone walls. The thread is about making old forms feel new without losing what made them special.
Two projects show how architects and designers are working with, not against, their sites and histories.
Bone Made's renovation of a Californian Bungalow for a family of six walks the line between heritage rules and open-plan living. The exterior stays true to its era; the inside gets custom joinery and oak floors. It's a case study in how to modernize without erasing character.
Alexandre Pavlidis's 'Within the Earth' on Sifnos uses rough drystone walls to tuck a home into a hillside, referencing local terraces for olives and grapes. The goal of being 'almost invisible' is a bold counterpoint to the showy villas that usually dominate Greek island architecture.
A medal error and a sports rebrand show how design can stumble or soar in public view.
The Sydney Marathon medal features Munich's Allianz Arena instead of a Sydney landmark, a slip that online sleuths caught. It's a reminder that even well-produced design can fail at the detail level, and that geography matters in commemorative objects.
The Archery World Cup rebrand by Arecibo avoids the usual sports logo backlash with bold colors, motion design, and a custom typeface. It's a rare example of a sports identity refresh that lands well, worth studying for what it does differently.
