Today's art world is split between the painstakingly slow and the boldly fast. A single animator spent 14 years hand-drawing a film, while Toei mapped out a One Piece movie through 2029. The contrast says something about where attention lives right now.
Two very different approaches to making movies landed today: one man alone in a studio for a decade and a half, and a franchise planning its next blockbuster four years out.
Michel Gagné has been hand-drawing 'The Saga of Rex' alone since 2012. The trailer looks stunning, and the piece frames it as a quiet rebuke to AI-assisted animation pipelines.
Toei announced two new One Piece films: 'God Valley' in summer 2027 and 'Baad' in 2029. No details yet, but the franchise is locked in for the long haul.
Sometimes the most instructive stories in art are the ones that went wrong. A new documentary digs into one of cinema's most notorious misfires.
A documentary called 'Boorman and the Devil' examines how 'Exorcist II: The Heretic' became such a legendary disaster. Boorman himself admits it was an infamous debacle but still can't quite explain it.
A few more things worth knowing from today's feed.
Grace Passô's debut 'Nosso Segredo' won Best Feature Film at Gramado, plus awards for cinematography and art direction. It follows a Black family rebuilding after loss.
Cecilia Fiona's textile and sculptural work in 'Iter Subterraneum' at Bergen Kunsthall blended fantasy and reality. The group show ran earlier this year with ten artists inspired by Ludvig Holberg.
