Warframe's next update rolls dice with a fantasy tabletop RPG minigame set inside its sci-fi universe

Warframe is adding a full Dungeons & Dragons-inspired tabletop RPG called Fables & Frontiers as part of its upcoming Amir's Shockwave update this August, according to Polygon. The minigame was created in-universe by the character Amir, and players will experience it through a dedicated questline that blends Warframe's sci-fi setting with fantasy role-playing tropes.

Polygon reported that Fables & Frontiers includes character creation, dice rolling, and narrative choices that lead to multiple endings. The mode is designed to authentically capture the tabletop RPG experience, with players taking on the role of Amir and his friends as they play the fictional game together within the Warframe universe.

The update also brings a new Warframe called Temple, new cosmetics, and a host of other content. Fables & Frontiers is described by Polygon as a "legally distinct" homage to Dungeons & Dragons, integrating fantasy RPG mechanics directly into Warframe's ongoing live-service structure. The minigame features branching dialogue and a complete narrative arc that players can revisit for different outcomes.

Digital Extremes has long packed Warframe with unusual side activities, but Fables & Frontiers represents a particularly deep detour from the core sci-fi action. Polygon noted that the minigame is "blending Warframe's sci-fi universe with fantasy RPG tropes," offering a narrative-driven break from the usual combat loop while still rewarding players with in-game progression tied to the main experience.
