Summary

Scientists have discovered a massive layer of permafrost beneath the upper slopes of Peru's tallest volcano, Nevado Coropuna, which may be one of the largest tropical permafrost areas in the world. The frozen ground layer, 15 to 20 meters thick and sitting 2-4 meters below the surface at roughly 5,000 meters elevation, could become a regionally important water source as nearby Andean glaciers retreat due to climate change.
