Disney+ has ordered a pilot for a reboot of The Mickey Mouse Club, the long-running variety series that famously launched the careers of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Christina Aguilera. The pilot comes from Fulwell Entertainment, the production company behind Hulu's The Kardashians, and is set to begin production this month in Los Angeles, according to Deadline.
"Iconic variety show that launched the careers of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling, and Keri Russell."
Deadline's description underscores the show's outsized role in pop culture history, making this reboot a high-stakes bet for Disney+ as it tries to capture that same lightning in a bottle with a new generation.
The pilot will feature 11 new young performers, including Hudson Stone, Casey Trotter, and Brooklynn Pitts, who recently appeared in the upcoming Camp Rock 3. Erianthe Akaata is also among the cast, as Deadline reported. Variety added that Scarlett London Diviney is on the roster as well.
"Classic kids program that originally launched in 1955 and helped discover young talents like Britney Spears, Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, and Christina Aguilera."
Variety's framing of the original as a discovery engine hints at the prestige the reboot inherits. With a pilot order already in place, the stakes are clear: Disney+ is betting that a new cast can echo the legendary alumni list, though replicating that track record will be no small feat.
