Lorde Calls Spotify's AI Feature Inaccurate and a Threat to Artistic Interpretation

Lorde publicly criticized Spotify’s new AI-powered “About the Song” feature this week, calling it both inaccurate and unwelcome. The Grammy-winning artist took to Instagram to call out the streaming platform over what she described as a misleading AI-generated summary of her track “Current Affairs.”
According to Pitchfork, the automated description incorrectly claimed the song was performed during a specific moment from her 2025 Ultrasound World Tour, which Lorde said was false. The feature, still in beta, uses artificial intelligence to generate contextual descriptions for songs across the platform.
“Not only is this inaccurate (not the song i did that in) but reducing a song to an ai generated meaning right at the source feels like it limits free interpretation imo.”
Lorde’s post argued that AI-generated explanations encroach on the listener’s freedom to interpret music on their own terms. Rolling Stone reported that the singer accused Spotify of sharing inaccurate, AI-generated information and overstepping artistic boundaries, highlighting growing tensions between creators and tech platforms over AI’s role in music discovery.
The controversy is part of Spotify’s broader push into artificial intelligence, which includes personalized playlists, an AI DJ feature, and now song descriptions. As reported by Rolling Stone, this push has increasingly drawn criticism from artists who feel their work is being misrepresented or diminished by automated tools.
Lorde’s criticism adds to a chorus of artists questioning the role of AI in creative spaces, particularly when it comes to summarizing or interpreting art. The “About the Song” feature remains in beta, and it is unclear whether Spotify will adjust its approach in response to the backlash.
