Sony Pictures Entertainment has made a $100 million strategic investment in Cosm, the startup behind immersive dome venues that blend digital and physical spaces, the company announced. The deal, described as a minority stake in Cosm's Series C financing round, also places Sony Pictures CEO Ravi Ahuja on Cosm's board of directors, as Deadline reported.
Cosm currently operates three locations in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Atlanta, with plans to expand to Detroit and Cleveland, according to Variety. The company was founded in 2020 by Steve Winn and builds what it calls "shared reality" venues that combine live sports and movie programming with immersive technology, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The investment follows Sony's acquisition of Alamo Drafthouse Theaters and signals the studio's broader bet on event-based cinema, IndieWire noted. As consumer habits shift, Sony is positioning itself at the intersection of entertainment and communal experiences.
"This move reflects the broader entertainment industry trend toward experiential offerings as consumer demand grows for immersive, forward-looking entertainment experiences."
The deal also underscores Sony's push into what the Los Angeles Times described as "communal entertainment experiences." With Cosm's dome theaters offering a hybrid of virtual reality and physical space, the studio is investing in a format that could redefine how audiences gather to watch content.
