If your house caught on fire tonight, the smell of smoke would not wake you up. This is because your sense of smell is the only sense that completely shuts down when you enter deep sleep. You can hear a baby cry, you can feel a cold draft, but you cannot smell anything. This is literally the only reason smoke detectors were invented: your nose stops working at 11 pm.
