The Rev. Michael Pfleger has been removed from his ministry at St. Sabina Church in Chicago as the Archdiocese of Chicago investigates a claim of child sexual abuse dating back more than 30 years. It marks the fifth decades-old accusation against the prominent social justice activist in four years, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Cardinal Blase Cupich informed parishioners in a letter that the alleged abuse occurred at St. Sabina more than 30 years ago and that Pfleger “strongly denied” the accusation. The Chicago Tribune also reported the removal, noting Pfleger had previously faced sexual abuse accusations from three men in 2021.
“It’s the fifth decades-old accusation against the South Side priest in four years.”
Pfleger, who has been cleared of the earlier allegations, called this latest claim "an absolute lie" in a written statement, according to the Sun-Times. He said he was informed of the accusation on Thursday, though the exact date of his removal was not specified.
The removal places one of Chicago’s most visible and outspoken clergy members on leave while church authorities investigate. Both outlets noted that Pfleger’s past accusers were not substantiated, but the archdiocese typically removes priests from active ministry during any credible investigation of a minor abuse claim.
