Netflix is developing a live-action television series adaptation of the Persona video game franchise, joining forces with production company 21 Laps and SEGA. Both Bleeding Cool and Variety reported that the project is in early development, with Christopher Monfette attached as writer, showrunner, and executive producer.
According to Variety, the series involves multiple production partners. Alongside 21 Laps, which brings executive producers Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Robert Atwood, Story Kitchen is also attached, with Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson serving as EPs. SEGA's Toru Nakahara is additionally set to executive produce.
Bleeding Cool noted that the adaptation will be a live-action series based on the popular Persona role-playing game franchise. The series marks one of the latest video game adaptations to be developed by Netflix, which has previously brought properties like The Witcher and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to the screen.
The involvement of 21 Laps, the production company behind Stranger Things, signals a high-profile commitment to the franchise. Monfette, who has worked on projects such as The Umbrella Academy, will lead the creative direction as both showrunner and executive producer. SEGA's direct participation through Nakahara ensures the game studio's oversight of the adaptation.
Neither outlet provided a timeline for production or release, reflecting the early stage of development. The Persona series, known for its blend of social simulation and dungeon-crawling gameplay, has sold millions of copies worldwide, making it a prime candidate for the growing live-action video game adaptation trend.
