Ford Motor Company has rehired more than 350 experienced engineers after its aggressive push to replace veteran staff with artificial intelligence backfired, costing the automaker billions of dollars. The move follows a frank admission by leadership that the strategy was a mistake.
According to neowin.net, Ford's Vice President of vehicle hardware engineering, Charles Poon, acknowledged that the company had underestimated the value of deep experience from engineers who had survived multiple product cycles. "Simply replacing them with AI was a mistake," Poon said. The newly rehired staff, often called "gray beards" inside the company, are now mentoring younger workers and fixing diagnostic systems and AI tools that failed to meet quality standards.
"Ford admitted that relying too heavily on automated quality systems led to mistakes, and the experienced engineers are now being brought back to lead quality reviews and help train the AI systems."
Hacker News reported that Ford executive Kumar Galhotra admitted the company didn't pay enough attention to the expertise of its most knowledgeable engineers. The reversal highlights a growing recognition in the industry that AI tools, while powerful, cannot fully replace the intuitive judgment and institutional knowledge gained through decades of hands-on work.
The automaker's about-face serves as a cautionary tale for other companies racing to automate complex engineering tasks. By bringing back the seasoned veterans, Ford is betting that their guidance will improve quality and prevent costly errors that the AI-driven systems were unable to catch on their own.
