Germany crashed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the round of 32, losing to Paraguay 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 following extra time at Boston Stadium. The result marks the first time the four-time champions have ever lost a World Cup penalty shootout, according to the Mirror.
Paraguay took the lead in the 42nd minute through Julio Enciso, Fox Sports reported. Germany equalized in the 54th minute when Kai Havertz headed home. A second-half goal from Jonathan Tah was ruled out after a VAR review for a foul, Fox Sports added, keeping the score level through 120 minutes of play.
"This marks the first time Germany have ever lost a penalty shootout at the World Cup."
In the shootout, Havertz and substitute Nick Woltemade both missed their spot kicks, the Mirror reported, while Jose Canale converted the decisive penalty for Paraguay. Germany entered as the favorite but ultimately fell in the shootout, Fox Sports noted.
The defeat eliminates Germany earlier than expected and adds a new, unwanted footnote to their storied tournament history. Paraguay advances to face the winner of the next knockout round fixture, having pulled off one of the upsets of the 2026 competition.
