Socialist Óscar López cleared to challenge Ayuso after securing required party endorsements

Óscar López, the Secretary General of the PSOE in Madrid and Minister for Digital Transformation, has been officially selected as the party's candidate to face current regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso in the 2027 elections. López secured the nomination after his only opponent, grassroots activist Silvia López Quivira, failed to gather the minimum number of endorsements required in the primary process.

According to elDiario.es, López surpassed the required 2,092 endorsements, which represents 15% of the census of party members, direct affiliates, and members of the Socialist Youth of Madrid. El País reported that Quivira needed 12% of endorsements from the approximately 14,000-member census but fell short, demonstrating her lack of organizational support against the party apparatus.

"Hoy empieza un tiempo nuevo," López said, as reported by okdiario. The phrase, meaning "Today a new time begins," signals the start of a campaign that will pit the PSOE against one of Spain's most prominent conservative leaders.

"He prometido que me voy a dejar la vida en cambiar la Comunidad de Madrid," López stated, according to Infobae. That promise to pour his life into changing the region underscores the high stakes for the PSOE, which has not held the Madrid presidency for decades.

The primary process, as covered by 20Minutos, left Quivira without the necessary support, cementing López's path to the candidacy for the elections scheduled for May 2027. With Ayuso currently leading the region, the PSOE is betting on a minister with national profile to mount a serious challenge.
