Mike Browning, the original drummer and co-founder of Morbid Angel and later founder of Nocturnus, has died at the age of 62. The news was confirmed over the past hours, though the cause of death has not yet been made public, according to The Gallery. Browning was a foundational figure in the development of American death metal, known for combining drumming with a distinctive vocal style.

The Tampa native began playing drums at 13, inspired by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd, as reported by Stereogum. Pitchfork added that he later drew influence from bands like Angel Witch, Slayer, and Mercyful Fate. His drumming and vocal style were closely linked: Pitchfork noted he was known for "aligning his vocals with the beat," a technique that became a hallmark of his playing.
After leaving Morbid Angel, Browning founded Nocturnus, a pioneering death metal band known for incorporating science fiction themes and keyboard elements. Blunt Magazine called him a "death metal pioneer" whose legacy endures. Metal Addicts highlighted his work as drummer and vocalist for Nocturnus AD, the later incarnation of the band.
