Koei Tecmo Had No Expectations for Pokémon Pokopia, But Internal Team Aimed for Record Sales

Koei Tecmo president and CEO Hisashi Koinuma revealed in a Famitsu interview that the social sim Pokémon Pokopia had no real expectations before its launch on Switch 2, despite the game going on to sell over four million copies. The title, developed by Koei Tecmo's Omega Force division, has become a surprise hit, but Koinuma said the company was caught off guard by its performance.
"there weren't any real expectations" attached to the title "before launch".
That lack of anticipation stands in stark contrast to the internal ambitions of Omega Force, which aimed to make Pokémon Pokopia the best-selling Pokémon spin-off of all time, according to Koinuma. The goal was lofty, given that the benchmark includes titles like Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, but early sales figures, ongoing DLC support, and a deep crafting loop have helped justify the aspiration.
Pokémon Pokopia has already sold more than four million copies, a figure that places it among the higher-selling spin-offs. Gameloop.gg noted that the game's crafting loop and DLC strategy have been key to its sustained popularity. Koinuma described the project as one of the most rewarding collaborative efforts Koei Tecmo has worked on, though he admitted the company did not forecast such a strong reception.
"we wanted to make the best-selling Pokemon spin-off."
With Nintendo and The Pokemon Company as partners, the title's success may set a new standard for future spin-offs. Koinuma's comments suggest that even without pre-launch hype, the combination of a beloved franchise and solid gameplay can yield surprising results.
