Microsoft has started adding an "Xbox Handheld" label to game store pages, appearing in the "Ways To Play" section for titles such as Gears of War: E-Day and Halo: Campaign Evolved. The badge indicates whether a game is optimized for handheld play, according to purexbox.com, which noted the system is similar to Steam Deck Verified.

Microsoft Adds Handheld Compatibility Badge to Xbox Store Listings

Windows Central reported that while Xbox already shows handheld optimization in the Xbox app, this new visual badge makes the information "more immediately clear" to shoppers browsing the store. The two outlets both noted that the label currently appears on a limited set of store pages, suggesting a gradual rollout.

The move has reignited speculation about Microsoft's plans for a dedicated portable Xbox device. Purexbox.com framed the addition as "sparking speculation about an official device," while Windows Central called the label "fueling speculation about portable gaming plans." Neither outlet reported any official confirmation from Microsoft about a handheld console.

"This is similar to Steam Deck Verified."

Purexbox.com drew a direct parallel to Valve's program, which certifies games for Steam Deck performance. The comparison suggests Microsoft may be laying groundwork for hardware that could compete in the handheld PC gaming space.

"fuels ongoing speculation about Microsoft's plans for a portable Xbox device, though the article notes this is largely speculative at this point."

Windows Central

Windows Central offered a more cautious assessment, stressing that the badge alone does not confirm a handheld device is imminent. For now, the label appears to serve as a practical guide for players using existing portable PCs or future Windows-based handhelds, with any larger hardware announcement remaining unconfirmed.
