Meta has released Muse Spark 1.1, a major update to its AI model focused on agentic and coding tasks, and opened API access to all developers for the first time. The move positions the company in direct competition with OpenAI and Anthropic, according to CNBC. The model is available via a paid API, marking Meta's first such commercial AI offering, as reported by Developers Digest.
"Muse Spark 1.1 adds a 1M-token context window, parallel sub-agents and computer-use training across desktop, mobile and browser."
The expanded context window and agentic capabilities are designed to handle complex, multi-step tasks, setting Muse Spark 1.1 apart from earlier versions that were limited to partner previews, CNBC noted.
Meta is pricing the new model aggressively to undercut competitors. Developers Digest reported that input tokens cost $1.25 per million, while Business Insider quoted CEO Mark Zuckerberg criticizing rivals' "extreme" pricing strategies. "The aggressive pricing reflects ongoing competition in the AI model space, with major tech companies vying for market share," Business Insider wrote.
Fortune reported that Meta claims Muse Spark 1.1 surpasses models from OpenAI and Anthropic on certain benchmarks, but the outlet noted that Meta "didn’t include comparisons to rival AI labs’ most recent releases." This omission leaves room for debate about how the new model truly stacks up against the latest from competitors.
The launch marks a strategic shift for Meta, which has long championed open-weight AI models. Developers Digest reported that the announcement sparked debate on Hacker News about what the closed-weights, paid API means for the company's open-weights philosophy. The Hindu Business Line framed the move as putting Meta "in direct competition with OpenAI and Anthropic" as the AI model wars intensify.
