Good Hero has announced a sequel to its 2016 animated film "Ballerina" (released as "Leap!" in the U.S.), along with plans for a television series and digital content, marking a major franchise expansion. The Paris-based studio made the announcement at the Annecy animated film festival, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Production on "Ballerina 2" begins this month, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the original film, which grossed $120 million worldwide across more than 100 countries, Deadline reported. The sequel is part of a broader strategy to grow the Ballerina universe across multiple media platforms including film, television, and YouTube.
"This marks the first step in Good Hero's strategy to grow the Ballerina universe across multiple media platforms including film, television, and YouTube."
The original feature, set in 1884 Paris, follows an orphaned country girl pursuing her ballet dreams and featured an English voice cast including Elle Fanning, Dane DeHaan, Nat Wolff, Kate McKinnon, and Carly Rae Jepsen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Variety reported that the expansion will be led by producers Gregory Ouanhon and Laurent Zeitoun, with both the sequel film and an animated TV series in development. The franchise will span film, television, and digital/YouTube platforms, signaling Good Hero's commitment to building a lasting animated property around the ballet theme.
