UK Crypto Scammers Who Impersonated Police to Steal Millions Sentenced to Prison

A UK criminal gang that posed as police officers to trick crypto holders out of $5.4 million has been sentenced to prison terms ranging from six to eleven years. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the convictions, which were handed down this week. According to Protos, the gang contacted unsuspecting crypto holders and "convinced them that their funds were at risk." The scammers instructed victims to transfer their cryptocurrency to so-called "safe accounts" controlled by the gang, a classic confidence trick dressed in law enforcement authority. CryptoFox.News reported that the stolen funds were spent lavishly. The gang "blew it on luxury cars, trips to Thailand & Japan, and high-end brands." Police also recovered approximately £500,000 in cash and some converted cryptocurrency during the investigation, demonstrating the scale of the operation. The sentences reflect the seriousness of the crime, with each gang member receiving substantial prison time. The case highlights a growing trend of impersonation scams targeting crypto investors, where criminals exploit trust in official institutions to bypass security measures. Authorities urge crypto holders to verify any unsolicited contact claiming to be from law enforcement.
