storyboard18.comWhatsApp usernames explained: Key features, privacy changes and phone number protectionstoryboard18.comWhatsApp has started allowing users to reserve usernames before the feature is rolled out globally later this year, marking one of the messaging platform's biggest privacy updates in recent years. The feature lets people connect using a unique username instead of their phone number in certain situations, reducing the need to share personal contact details with people they have just met or interact with for the first time. The rollout is happening in phases. Users who have access can reserve a username now, while the complete feature will become available gradually over the coming months. Why WhatsApp is introducing usernamesWhatsApp said the feature is designed to protect users' phone numbers and give them greater control over who can contact them. The platform, which has more than three billion users globally, has so far relied on phone numbers as the primary way to connect. With usernames, users can continue using their phone numbers if they choose, but they will also have the option of sharing a username instead.According to the company, usernames are meant to improve privacy rather than function as a social media identity. What changes with the new feature?Once the feature is enabled, users will no longer have to reveal their phone number in several situations. These include: When messaging someone for the first time using a usernameWhen participating in certain large group chats where a phone number would otherwise be visible WhatsApp said there will not be a public directory or searchable list of usernames. People will need to know a user's exact username before they can start a conversation.Username key adds another layer of protectionAlongside usernames, WhatsApp is introducing an optional username key.Users can create a username key and share it separately with trusted contacts. Anyone trying to message them through their username for the first time will need this key before the conversation can begin. The key can be changed whenever required.Username rules and safety measuresUsernames must be between three and 35 characters long.If a preferred username has already been taken, WhatsApp will suggest available alternatives. The company also plans to offer a username generator to help users choose a unique handle. To reduce impersonation, WhatsApp said it will reserve usernames linked to celebrities, public figures, government entities and other high-profile accounts. What it means for businesses and creatorsBusinesses, creators and organisations with existing Instagram or Facebook accounts will be able to claim matching usernames on WhatsApp, helping them maintain the same identity across Meta's platforms. How to reserve your WhatsApp usernameUsers who have received the feature can reserve a username by following these steps: Update WhatsApp to the latest version Open Settings Tap Account Select Username Choose an available username and confirm itIf the option has not yet appeared, WhatsApp said users will receive an in-app notification once the feature is available in their country. What Kunal Shah saidAnnouncing the rollout on X, WhatsApp head Kunal Shah encouraged users to reserve their preferred usernames before the wider launch."Timing is everything. Joined WhatsApp early enough to claim my username before we release this to the world. Time to get yours. A more private way to connect. Coming soon to your WhatsApp," he said.Timing is everything.
