Disability Rights UK is looking for a committed and detail‑oriented Assistant Editor to support the development of our flagship publication, the Disability Rights Handbook. The Disability Rights Handbook is a trusted guide to the UK welfare system. Now in its 51st year, the Handbook provides comprehensive, up-to-date information on benefits, services, and rights. Often described by readers as the “benefits bible” , it is used widely by Disabled people, advisers, and organisations nationwide. At Disability Rights UK, we are looking for someone to work closely with the Lead Editor to support all stages of the editorial and production process. We are open to this role being offered either as a part-time employed position (25 hours per week) or on a freelance basis , depending on candidate preference. This will be discussed at the interview stage. Key responsibilities You will support all stages of the editorial and production process, including: Assisting with planning and coordination of handbook content Conducting research into welfare rights, benefits and social care policy Supporting the writing, editing and updating of existing and new material Proofreading and fact-checking content to ensure accuracy and clarity Assisting in the production of artwork and layout-ready content Working collaboratively with the Lead Editor across deadlines and production cycles Supporting the creation of bi-monthly updates for the Handbook Updater Contributing to other welfare rights publications where capacity allows We’re looking for someone who combines strong editorial skills with an interest in welfare rights and social justice.
