A heartbreaking discovery in Northern California has shocked animal advocates and shelters across California.Authorities in Humboldt County say at least 117 dogs were found dead at Miranda's Rescue near Fortuna after search warrants were served last week. Investigators say more than 730 dogs were initially unaccounted for, prompting a large-scale investigation.Among the animals confirmed dead were two puppies, Felicia and Farkle, that had recently been transferred from the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. The puppies were among the first eight animals recovered, according to the shelter's latest social media post.State investigators say many of the dogs appeared to have been killed by gunfire. In addition to the 117 sets of canine remains, authorities recovered nearly two dozen dog skulls, hundreds of bones and approximately 600 dog collars at two separate sites. In the statement, the Palm Springs Animal Shelter said it transferred the puppies believing they were going to a trusted rescue partner where they would have the opportunity to find loving homes. The shelter added that it followed the same screening and transfer practices commonly used by shelters and rescue organizations nationwide and had no reason to believe the animals would not receive proper care. Staff members also held a vigil to honor the animals affected by the tragedy. The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office says investigators have interviewed dozens of shelters connected to Miranda's Rescue, and the investigation remains in its early stages. No additional details have been released as authorities continue to determine what happened. For more Coachella Valley News visit NBCPalmSprings.com
