The first trailer for Soulm8te, an erotic thriller spin-off of the horror hit M3GAN, has arrived, but audiences will have to stream it rather than catch it in theaters. Polygon reported the trailer debut, describing the film as continuing the universe established by M3GAN while shifting genres from horror to erotic thriller.
According to Polygon, the film follows a "romance robot" that goes berserk. :: Polygon This pivot from the original's killer-doll premise to a more adult tone marks a deliberate expansion of the franchise into new territory.
Avclub noted that Soulm8te is being released directly on streaming rather than in theaters. The outlet linked the decision to the underperformance of M3GAN 2.0, with Blumhouse founder Jason Blum acknowledging the studio's misstep. "[The studio] overestimated audience engagement with the character." :: Avclub The direct-to-streaming route suggests Blumhouse is recalibrating its approach after the sequel failed to match the original's box office success.
Blumhouse is betting that streaming will find the right audience for a more mature take on the M3GAN universe. Polygon confirmed a streaming release date is set, though the film's shift in genre and distribution strategy signals a franchise trying to evolve beyond its breakout theatrical moment.
