Scottish musician Theo Bleak has released a new cover of The Waterboys' 'We Will Not Be Lovers', a track from the band's 1988 album Fisherman's Blues, as Stereogum reported. Hotpress also covered the release, noting Bleak's reimagining of the song, originally by the Scottish rock group led by Mike Scott.
Bleak's version takes a dramatically different approach from The Waterboys' original. According to Stereogum, her rendition is slower, sparser, and more melancholic, described as 'haunted' yet retaining a bright quality. The cover arrives with a music video directed by Jacob Gandy, adding a visual layer to the stripped-back sound.
"Theo Bleak takes an atmospheric approach to The Waterboys' 'We Will Not Be Lovers'"
The sparse arrangement and haunting tone mark a departure from the more raucous original, which was built around a driving folk-rock rhythm. Bleak's interpretation instead leans into a fragile, intimate atmosphere, showcasing her ability to reshape familiar material into something deeply personal.
This new release follows Bleak's December 2023 project 'Bargaining', which Stereogum noted was named Album Of The Week at the time. The cover continues a pattern of introspective, emotionally resonant work from the Scottish singer-songwriter, further establishing her as an artist capable of finding new depth in well-known songs.
