How 'sense of place' shapes nicotine and tobacco consumption: A qualitative study in a superdiverse UK neighbourhood
Summary
This qualitative research paper explores how 'sense of place' (the subjective and experiential aspects of place) influences health-related behaviours, specifically attitudes towards and consumption of nicotine and tobacco products. Based on 42 interviews in Handsworth, Birmingham (a superdiverse UK neighbourhood), the study found that nicotine and tobacco consumption patterns were shaped by neighbourhood identity and diversity, local infrastructure of nicotine provision, normalisation and regulation of products, and the presence or absence of place-based community solidarity. The paper discusses implications for place-based health approaches.
