Anya Taylor-Joy has been cast in 'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum' and admits she hasn't cracked open J.R.R. Tolkien's books yet, but she intends to start soon, multiple outlets reported. The actress will play an elf named Seren, a brand-new character created specifically for the upcoming prequel film, according to IGN France.
"Another string to her bow. Anya Taylor-Joy says she's about to read the Lord of the Rings books as she embarks upon her own journey through Middle-earth."
IGN France added that Seren is a "lethal elf" who does not appear in any of Tolkien's original texts, meaning Taylor-Joy will be exploring uncharted territory even for longtime fans of the series. Glamsham also described her role as the "lethal elf Seren."
The actress explained to Variety's Marc Malkin that as a child she held a self-imposed rule that fans had to choose between the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises. That changed during the COVID-19 pandemic when she finally watched Peter Jackson's film trilogy.
"As a child, she believed she could only be a Harry Potter fan OR a Lord of the Rings fan, a self-imposed rule she's now discarding."
Taylor-Joy told Variety that she watched the LOTR films during the pandemic and realized she could embrace both beloved fantasy worlds. Now, with her casting in 'The Hunt for Gollum,' she is ready to dive into the books for the first time, a journey that comicbasics.com noted will let her "explore Middle-earth for the first time in a deeper way." Whether her fresh perspective or the entirely original character Seren will resonate with diehard Tolkien readers remains to be seen.
