The Supreme Court has thrown out longtime rules that limited how much money a national political party could spend in coordination with individual candidates.In a 6-3 ruling written by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the court found that those spending limits violate free speech rights under the First Amendment, based on the idea that political spending counts as a form of speech.The case was brought by Vice President JD Vance, back when he was running as the Republican candidate for Senate in Ohio, along with the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee, and a Republican congressman from Ohio who lost his re-election bid.The decision continues a pattern from the Supreme Court of striking down campaign finance laws, including the 2010 Citizens United ruling that opened the door to unlimited spending by super PACs.
