Square Enix has quietly released a version of Star Ocean: The Second Story R for the newly launched Switch 2, according to multiple outlets including Vooks, overworld.vg, and Nintendo Life. The announcement came as a surprise, with no prior indication that the enhanced port was in development.
"Surprise! Square Enix Has Released A Switch 2 Version Of Star Ocean: The Second Story R"
The outlet further noted that players should not expect an upgrade pathway from the original Switch version. Vooks and overworld.vg both reported that there is no upgrade path available for existing owners of the game.
Nintendo Life specifically advised: "Just don't expect an upgrade pathway." The lack of a discounted or free upgrade means fans who already purchased the game on the original Switch would need to buy the full Switch 2 edition separately.
The coverage was picked up by at least seven outlets, including Gematsu, GoNintendo, Nintendo Everything, Nintendo World Report, and Noisy Pixel, as noted by overworld.vg. The game originally launched for the first Switch in 2023 as a remake of the 1998 classic, and the new edition appears to take advantage of the Switch 2's improved hardware.
