Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India's first hydrogen-powered train from Jind in Haryana on July 17, marking the country's entry into a small group of nations actively exploring hydrogen as a railway fuel. The train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route, supported by a dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling facility, according to news9live.com.
"The indigenous 10-coach train will operate between Jind and Sonipat, marking a major milestone in Indian Railways' clean-mobility journey."
Businesstoday.in reported that the train is powered by hydrogen fuel cells, generates electricity onboard, and releases only water vapour during operation, resulting in zero carbon emissions. Its 3,200-horsepower propulsion system makes it one of the world's most powerful hydrogen trainsets.
India joins a select group of countries, including Germany, Japan, China, and the United States, that are exploring hydrogen for cleaner rail transportation, cinaradio.com reported. The project also establishes India's first integrated hydrogen railway ecosystem, according to manufacturing.economictimes.indiatimes.com.
"This initiative marks a significant step towards cleaner transport solutions."
The launch represents a historic milestone in India's shift toward clean transportation, socialnews.xyz noted. Asianet Newsable highlighted that the indigenously developed train uses fuel cell technology for zero emissions, positioning it as a major step in sustainable transport for India. ShortSingh added that the development signals the country's growing commitment to sustainable energy solutions in its public transport sector.
