Palm Springs Businesses Counting on Locals This Summer

As the summer season brings fewer visitors to the Coachella Valley, some Palm Springs business owners say they're feeling the effects and are asking the community to help.Gwendolyn Gatti, owner of Tops N Tees in downtown Palm Springs, says business has slowed significantly this year and worries many small businesses are facing similar challenges. She hopes locals will make an effort to shop at neighborhood stores and dine at local restaurants throughout the summer, helping businesses stay afloat until the busy tourist season returns."It's not just about one store," Gatti said. "Supporting local businesses helps create jobs and keeps the unique character of Palm Springs alive."Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills is echoing that message. While acknowledging summer has traditionally been a slower time for local businesses, Mills says community support is more important than ever.He encourages residents to skip an online purchase every now and then and instead support a local brick-and-mortar business or restaurant. Mills also issued a challenge during VillageFest, asking everyone attending to stop into at least one local business and make a purchase.Both Gatti and Mills say even small purchases can make a meaningful difference for the shops and restaurants that help define downtown Palm Springs and contribute to the city's vibrant community year-round.
