Square Enix Pulls the Plug on Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, Citing Production Cost Challenges

Square Enix has announced the shutdown of Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, a free-to-play gacha game that brought together stories from across the FFVII universe. The game's servers will close on October 6, giving players only a few months to experience what remains, according to Kotaku.
Released in December 2023 for mobile and PC, the game was designed to revisit key moments from Final Fantasy VII and its spinoffs, including Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus. Gamespot noted that it "recreates the events of Final Fantasy VII" alongside those side stories, offering a condensed tour of the franchise's expanded lore.
In the shutdown announcement, producer Shoichi Ichikawa was unusually direct about the decision. Kotaku reported that he "candidly cited the inability to balance production costs with player demand for character weapons and gear." The comment highlights a persistent tension in live-service games, where ongoing content must justify its expense against ever-evolving player expectations.
For fans who have yet to dive in, the window is tight. Ever Crisis is a free-to-play title, but its gacha mechanics and regular updates required sustained spending to remain viable. With the end now set, players have until early October to see what the game offered before Square Enix moves on to focus on other Final Fantasy VII projects.
