Marvel Studios is moving forward with a feature film centered on the cosmic hero Nova, tapping Michael Waldron to write the script and potentially direct. The project, previously developed as a television series, was shelved more than a year ago but has now been revived as a movie, according to multiple industry reports.
Waldron, best known for creating the Disney+ series "Loki" and co-writing "Avengers: Doomsday," will steer the adaptation of the fan-favorite Marvel Comics character. Deadline reported that the project is "in early development," with no official confirmation yet from Marvel or Waldron's representatives. IGN France noted that Waldron is set to write and "potentially direct" the film, marking his possible directorial debut for the studio.
"The cosmic Marvel hero's solo outing is being developed by Loki creator Michael Waldron, and will bring a fan-favorite character to the MCU close to a decade after Avengers: Infinity War set up the perfect..."
ComicBook highlighted that the Nova project arrives years after "Avengers: Infinity War" teased the character's potential introduction, though that setup never materialized on screen. The outlet also noted that the film could serve as a replacement for Star-Lord, another cosmic hero whose story concluded with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
Collider reported that the project was "previously planned as a series" before being reimagined as a movie. The shift from serialized storytelling to a theatrical feature suggests Marvel is betting on Nova's solo appeal in the same vein as other cosmic entries. MovieWeb added that the film was originally conceived as a "Canceled 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Spin-Off Series," now moving forward as an MCU movie.
Disney itself acknowledged the development in a brief statement, confirming that Waldron has been brought on board to write the script "with plans to direct the feature if it moves forward." The outlet noted that the project is in "early development," meaning a release date and casting remain uncertain. For now, Marvel fans eager to see Richard Rider or Sam Alexander on the big screen will have to wait for further updates from the studio.
