The UK government has launched a new delivery plan aimed at protecting 30 percent of England's land for nature by 2030. The 30by30 plan, announced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, comes with new funding to support national parks and landscapes in stepping up nature recovery efforts.
According to BusinessGreen, the plan is backed by £37 million in funding to help National Parks and landscapes accelerate conservation work. Meanwhile, Carbon Pulse reported that the government has set aside £40 million for the same purpose. Open Access Government noted the plan is backed by "fresh funding" without specifying a figure, and described it as an acceleration of action to protect 30% of England's land.
The initiative fulfills a key international commitment under the global biodiversity framework. Carbon Pulse noted the plan is designed to progress England's pledge to conserve 30 percent of its land by 2030. BusinessGreen reported that the funding will support National Parks as leaders in nature recovery.
However, campaigners have already voiced concerns about the plan's ambition. BusinessGreen reported that campaigners claim the new strategy remains "badly underpowered" relative to the scale of the challenge. The government will need to demonstrate that the funding and measures are sufficient to meet the 2030 target.
