Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has accepted Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood's offer of a meeting with the chairman of the Royal and VIP Executive Committee, Ravec, following the death of former minister and Reform UK spokesperson Ann Widdecombe. GB News reported that Farage, who is no longer a sitting MP after resigning to trigger a by-election in Clacton, confirmed he would attend the meeting to discuss security for all Reform politicians, including those not in parliament.
Widdecombe's body was found with serious injuries at her home in Devon last week, an incident that has raised alarm about the safety of former MPs and members of smaller parties. The Guardian reported that Mahmood addressed the Commons, stating the case "raises questions about security protections for former MPs and politicians from smaller parties, including those not currently in parliament." She insisted all MPs are treated equally regarding security provisions.
"Thank you for this offer, Shabana Mahmood. I will meet with the Chair of Ravec and discuss the security of all Reform politicians, including those who are not MPs."
Farage's acceptance comes after the Reform Party voiced fears over the safety of its representatives. The Daily Star noted that Mahmood acknowledged those anxieties directly, saying she recognised "the particular concern that the Reform Party will feel today, and of course Nigel Farage, the party's leader." The Home Secretary, according to the Express, also said she would assess security advice for former MPs in the wake of Widdecombe's murder.
The meeting offer represents an olive branch from the government amid heightened political tensions. The Guardian added that Mahmood told the Commons the incident has prompted a review of how security is allocated to politicians from parties with fewer MPs, ensuring that protections remain consistent regardless of a politician's current parliamentary status.
