The EU has adopted new rules for detergents and surfactants to make cleaning products safer and more sustainable. The revised Detergents Regulation will strengthen biodegradability requirements, prohibit animal testing, and improve consumer safety by ensuring poison centres receive ingredient information before products reach the market. It also introduces digital product passports providing clear, standardised information on ingredients, safety and the environmental impact. Finally, it supports refill systems and innovative cleaning solutions. The new rules will apply from summer 2029.
