NBC has ordered a second season of its Emmy-nominated nature documentary series "The Americas," bringing back Tom Hanks as narrator. The renewal was announced alongside plans for two standalone specials, with production already underway on the new season, which is set to premiere in 2028, according to Variety.
"The series, which originally premiered in February 2025 after being greenlit in 2020, explores untold wildlife stories across the Americas from locations including the frozen north, the wild west, the Atlantic coast, and Patagonia."
The 10-part event series will venture into new regions and highlight more of the supercontinent's wildlife, as Bleeding Cool reported. NBC noted that the first season reached over 36 million viewers, a figure that likely helped pave the way for the early renewal.
Viewers won't have to wait until 2028 for more content from the franchise. A special titled "The Americas: A Wild 250th" is scheduled to air on NBC on July 2 and stream the following day on Peacock, as Variety reported. Another special, "The Americas: Mother's Day," is planned for 2027.
"Production on Season 2 is already underway."
The early renewal signals confidence from NBC in the documentary series, which originally took five years from greenlight to premiere. With Hanks returning as the voice guiding audiences through the natural wonders of the Americas, the network is betting on the show's broad appeal and strong viewership to carry into the next cycle.
