Meta is dramatically expanding its Hyperion data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, pouring billions more into the facility as part of the company's artificial intelligence strategy. The project, originally announced as a joint venture with Blue Owl Capital, will now become Meta's largest data center worldwide.
According to CNBC, the Hyperion data center is now projected to cost over $50 billion and reach 5 gigawatts of capacity, up from the initial $27 billion and 2GW plan announced in October. Nola.com reported that Meta's expansion plans will more than double the size of the already massive project with an additional $40 billion in investment.
Louisiana has supported the expansion through generous tax incentives, CNBC noted, helping secure Meta's commitment to the rural parish. The state's offer played a key role in convincing the social media giant to grow the facility beyond its original scope.
The rapid scaling of the Richland Parish site underscores the intense demand for computing power to support AI products. With the Hyperion expansion, Meta is positioning Louisiana as a critical node in its infrastructure buildout, competing with other tech giants racing to build out AI capacity across the country.
