Paolo Maldini has been appointed as technical director for Italy's national teams, the Italian Football Federation announced, as the country restructures following its failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Both KOHA and gazeteoksijen.com reported the move.
Under the new structure, Maldini will head what FIGC president Giovanni Malago called the 'Italy Club' system, according to gazeteoksijen.com. The federation also named former AC Milan teammate Leonardo as Maldini's advisor, KOHA reported.
The appointment comes as part of a broader rebuilding effort after Italy missed out on the 2026 World Cup, a blow that prompted the federation to overhaul its approach. Malago, who took over as FIGC president, is leading the reorganization.
Maldini, one of the most decorated defenders in football history, previously served as technical director at AC Milan. His return to a national team role marks a significant move for Italian football.
