Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner says he is reflecting on the future of his campaign after denying a sexual assault allegation made by a woman who spoke with CNN and Politico. In a video posted Monday, Platner called the allegation "troubling, serious and false," and said any accusation of nonconsensual behavior is categorically untrue. He also acknowledged the controversy could affect Democrats' effort to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November.Platner's comments come one week before Maine's July 13 deadline for candidates to withdraw from the general election ballot. If he steps aside, the state Democratic Party would have two weeks to select a replacement nominee. The allegation has prompted several Democratic leaders and organizations to rescind their endorsements and publicly call on Platner to leave the race. Among them are Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona, Rep. Ro Khanna of California, End Citizens United, and the Maine Democratic Party.Collins condemned the allegations but declined to comment on whether Platner should remain in the race, saying it is up to Democrats to choose their nominee.Platner has denied the allegation and has not announced whether he will continue his campaign. CNN Newsource reports the race is considered a key contest that could help determine control of the U.S. Senate following the November election.
