A local breast cancer survivor is turning her personal experience into a powerful message of awareness and prevention.Edith Cantu, a fitness instructor and business owner in the Coachella Valley, is encouraging women to make regular breast self-exams a priority after discovering her own cancer through a routine self-check."The way that I found out that I had cancer, I did a self-exam," Cantu said. "It took five seconds of my time, and those five seconds saved my life."According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, making early detection a critical tool in improving outcomes. After successfully completing treatment and becoming cancer-free, Cantu has embraced a new chapter in her life. In addition to continuing her work helping women achieve their fitness goals, she has begun competing in beauty pageants as a way to inspire others and celebrate survivorship.Friends and supporters say her journey demonstrates resilience, strength and hope for others facing similar challenges.Cantu says her mission now extends beyond fitness. She hopes to encourage more women to schedule screenings, perform self-exams and recognize changes in their bodies before problems become more serious. Her message comes as communities across the country continue to recognize cancer survivors and raise awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection.Health experts recommend women speak with their healthcare providers about appropriate screening schedules based on their age, family history and individual risk factors. Early detection remains one of the most effective ways to improve breast cancer survival rates. For more Coachella Valley News visit NBCPalmSprings.com
