French Court Ruling on Le Pen Eligibility Could Derail Presidential Ambitions

The Paris Court of Appeal is set to decide on Tuesday whether to uphold a five-year ban from public office against Marine Le Pen, a ruling that could block the far-right leader from running in the 2027 presidential election, according to Infobae and ara.cat.
Infobae reported that the decision, expected around 13:30 local time (11:30 GMT), will determine if the court confirms the disqualification imposed by a lower court, which also handed Le Pen a prison sentence. The 57-year-old leader of the far-right National Rally party faces what ara.cat described as "greus conseqüències polÃtiques" (serious political consequences) if the ban stands.
"La inhabilitación para ejercer cargos públicos durante cinco años que un tribunal inferior impuso a la lÃder de la derecha, de 57 años, junto con una pena de prisión"
The lower court's sentence, which included both the public office ban and a prison term, now hangs in the balance as the appellate judges review the case. Ara.cat noted that the judicial decision could directly affect Le Pen's candidacy in the next presidential election, "posant en risc el seu futur polÃtic" (putting her political future at risk).
Both outlets highlighted the political stakes: Le Pen has been a dominant force in French politics, finishing second in the 2022 presidential runoff. If the ban is confirmed, it would remove her from contention for the top office, reshaping the far-right field ahead of 2027. The court's ruling is being closely watched across France and Europe as a test of judicial independence and political accountability.
