Windows 11 Search Gets a Major Cleanup with Ad-Free, Local-First Results in Latest Insider Test

Microsoft is rolling out a revamped search experience to Windows 11 Insiders that strips out ads, removes promotional clutter, and prioritizes local apps, files, and settings over web results. The update, detailed on the Windows Blog, addresses long-standing user complaints that search had become too noisy and reliant on web fallbacks. Coverage from PCMag, notebookcheck.net, Pureinfotech, and The Verge confirms the overhaul is now live in the Experimental channel.
"You’ve have been asking for search that is faster, more relevant, and easier to use, whether you’re opening an app, finding a file, or changing a setting."
Microsoft is responding to that feedback directly by eliminating recommended content and ads that previously appeared in the right pane of the search homescreen, The Verge reported. The new design displays only recent searches, creating a cleaner starting point. According to notebookcheck.net, the build also introduces clearer result highlighting, large file previews, and a revamped "Open with" menu for better file handling.
In a notable shift, the experimental build offers users the option to prevent web searches and Microsoft Store results from appearing at all in search results, PCMag noted. This gives power users more control over whether Bing and Store suggestions surface alongside local content, reducing what Pureinfotech described as "web distractions." The change is part of a broader effort by Microsoft to win back trust in Windows 11 by focusing on core functionality over promotion.
PCMag also highlighted that these search improvements follow a similar cleanup of the widgets board, signaling a consistent push to declutter the interface. The Verge characterized the move as part of "Microsoft's efforts to regain user trust and fix Windows." With ads removed and local results prioritized, the search box is poised to become a more reliable tool for navigating the operating system rather than a gateway to the web.
