Large-scale study finds hourly movement breaks offer best balance of feasibility and effectiveness for reducing harms of prolonged sitting

10d ago· 32 min readenInsight

Summary

This large-scale pragmatic study (n=19,342) embedded within an interactive podcast evaluated the real-world viability of brief, regular movement breaks to offset harms of prolonged sitting. Participants took 5-minute walking breaks at self-selected frequencies (every 30, 60, or 120 minutes). All break frequencies exceeded viability thresholds for implementation outcomes. Hourly breaks offered the best balance between feasibility and effectiveness. Significant improvements in fatigue, positive affect, and negative affect were observed across all arms, with dose-response patterns. The study supports movement breaks as a potentially viable public health strategy to reduce harms of prolonged sedentary behavior.

All arms exceeded the viability threshold (>3.0) for implementation outcomes.
Hourly breaks offered the best balance between feasibility and effectiveness.
These findings support movement breaks as a potentially viable public health strategy to reduce the harms of prolonged sedentary behaviour.
Improvements showed a dose-response pattern: the 30-minute and 60-minute arms exceeded minimal important difference thresholds for fatigue and positive affect.
Feasibility was higher at lower break frequencies, while acceptability and appropriateness were high across arms.

Brief, regular movement breaks have been proposed as a public health strategy to offset the harms of prolonged sedentary behaviour; however, their real-world viability is unclear. This study aimed to assess the implementation potential, effectiveness on p
